Organizing Tips

These organizing tips can be used when arranging your room or an entire house. Even if the task seems daunting, these guidelines can make the process more manageable.

Set Objectives

What are your goals? Is it to sort your DVD collection? Do you want to arrange those figurines scattered around the house? Or just throw out those old receipts and magazines? Define your goals and jot it down. Set goals for every room of the house and start working on them. This will help you get things done instead of just moving them around in circles.

If you’re having trouble deciding what to keep, one of the best organizing tips is to assess what is needed in the room. Avoiding clutter is easier if you limit the room contents to what is required.

Avoid Distractions

If you keep answering that phone, you’ll never finish. Try to pick a time when you won’t be bothered by people. If you still get calls, make it brief. There’s no need to be rude, but do tell them that you’re cleaning the house. Unless the text messages are important, don’t even respond to it.

Dispose of Junk

One of the reasons rooms get cluttered is the tendency not to throw away anything. From old coupons to outdated schoolbooks, we get into this mentality that they might still be needed someday.

When tackling this problem, one of the best organizing tips is to donate them. Old schoolbooks or clothes can be sent to charitable organizations. The same thing can be done with toys, shoes and other household items. If you have an old computer you don’t use, give it to someone who can.

Look in your basement and garage. These are the places where junk accumulates. Throw away those old newspapers, plastic wrappers and other stuff in there.

Set Aside a Time

It will take a day or two to rearrange a room. More time will be required for the house. You can do it early in the morning or after you come home from work. You don’t need to spend hours at it. A good organizing tip is to get your list and go over the small tasks (i.e., sorting out your DVDs). Concentrate on the bigger tasks during the weekend.

Other Suggestions

Don’t throw away those old jars and boxes. Use them to store pencils, paper clips or other things. Use the jars to store food (like candies or cookies). You can also use them for decoration; a little paint job will do the trick.

Wait until you’re through with most of the cleaning before buying new containers. This way you’ll know how many you need. You don’t want to end up with items you’re not going to use.

Get rid of all those magnets on the refrigerator. They serve a purpose but if you attach everything there, finding the necessary info will be hard. Retain only the essential ones.

These organizing tips can help you make sense of even the most chaotic rooms. With a little planning, you might be amazed at how quickly you’ll be able to get things done.
